This true-color Terra MODIS image from January 4, 2003, features smog over the northern Italian city of Venice. The smog appears grayish-brown and obscures the land beneath. To the left of the smog is a large fog bank covering most of Italy’s fertile northern plains, northern cities, and most of the Gulf of Venice. High thin cirrus clouds streak across central Italy, Corsica, and the Ligurian (upper left) and Tyrrhenian (center left) Seas, while low clouds are dotted across central Italy, Croatia (upper right), and Bosnia-Herzegovina (right edge).
