Fires in the Nile delta

Nineteen fires were detected near Adana, Turkey, and seven in the Nile Delta in this true-colorModerate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image acquired November 1, 2002, by theTerra satellite. Adana is located near the northeastern corner of the Mediterranean, in avalley that is surrounded by green hills. The city appears as a light gray smudge just south of the turquoise-colored Seyhan Baraji Lake, about 50 km(1 km = 0.62 miles) north of the coast. The fires in Egypt’s Nile Delta are north of Cairo, which sits at the point where the Nile River widensinto the Delta, and is visible as a gray smudge in the higher resolutions of the image.

Besides Turkey and Egypt, a number of other countries are visible. The island nation of Cyprus sits about 75 km south of Turkey and 115 km west ofSyria. About 150 km southeast of Cyprus is Lebanon. South of Lebanon is Israel, which borders Egypt to the southwest, Jordan to the east, and Syriato the northeast near the Lebanon border. To the east of the Gulf of Aqaba in the southeastern portion of the image is Saudi Arabia.
