Monday, February 12, 1996 -- Secretary of Transportation Federico Peña today announced the release of the twenty-fourth edition of the National Transportation Statistics (NTS) report from the U.S. Department of Transportation.

The department s Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) has performed a valuable service for those who require transportation information, Secretary Peña said. This report continues to serve as a comprehensive source of statistics from a wide variety of government and private sources brought together in one convenient location.

The data contained in the NTS report illustrate activity for the major transportation modes and are collected to support research, analysis, and decision- making across all areas of transportation. The data are provided in five-year increments for 1960-1993, and 1994 where available. In some instances, data extend back to 1955 and are forecast through 1998. In addition, selected preliminary statistics from the 1993 Commodity Flow Survey are included.

Dr. T. R. Lakshmanan, director of BTS, said that Accessibility to these data is vital to the transportation community. Over the years, this document has become an indispensable tool for users of transportation statistics.

National Transportation Statistics is also available on CD-ROM and on diskette in Excel format.
