Monday, June 2, 1997 -- U.S. Secretary of Transportation Rodney E. Slater today announced the release of the International Travel & Tourism (T&T) CD-ROM from the department's Bureau of Transportation Statistics.

"Travel and tourism represent an ever-increasing share of the world's economy," Secretary Slater said. "By providing information from almost 100 national and international organizations worldwide on CD-ROM, the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) has provided a tool that is an invaluable service to the travel community."

The International Travel & Tourism (T&T) CD-ROM was designed to collect statistics and associated information from national and international organizations that provide a broad view of international travel and tourism; make worldwide travel and tourism statistics more accessible; and serve as a resource for research, analysis, international comparisons, and the enhancement of statistical collection and presentation.

The information on the CD-ROM includes statistics from a broad cross-section of travel, tourism and statistical agencies representing nations from every region of the world. In addition, the CD-ROM contains statistics and reference materials from international organizations such as the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, the United Nations, and the World Tourism Organization.

Over 12,000 pages from 230 documents are included on the CD-ROM, as well as approximately 15,000 electronic spreadsheets based on statistical tables from the publications. The multimedia, multiplatform, multilingual CD-ROM contains on-disc keyword search, file copy utility and interactive help features.

Dr. T.R. Lakshmanan, Director of BTS, said that accessibility to global travel and tourism statistics facilitates research, analysis, and discussion of travel and tourism and its impact on national and global economies and that information on the T&T CD-ROM would complement the Bureau's American Travel Survey results scheduled for release later this year.
