Vibrant late-spring green and winter white contrast sharply in this true-color Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image from June 13, 2002 of the Pacific Northwest region of North America. At top is the Canadian province of British Columbia, with the snow-covered Coast Ranges (west) and Rocky Mountains (east) reaching down into (left to right) Washington, Idaho, and Montana. The Columbia River makes a sinuous border between Washington and Oregon to its south. In south-central Idaho, a dark brown patch marks the location of an ancient lava flow on the current Snake River Plain.
