Fires and burn scars in Oregon

Wildfires continue to scorch thousands of acres in Oregon. This false-color Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image from July 17, 2002, shows numerous fires (red dots) burning throughout the state. Vegetation is bright green, bare soil is tan, and burned areas are reddish-brown. The increasing number and continuing growth in the state’s wildfires has led the government to offer 650 Army soldiers as temporary firefighters to the state, according to news reports.
