The Aqua MODIS instrument acquired this true-color image of fires in the central United States on April 10, 2003. Because this is the start of the spring planting season, the fires are likely agricultural in nature. The majority of the fires are concentrated in Kansas (top) and Oklahoma (bottom), with single fires appearing in Nebraska, Iowa, and Missouri at top and a few more in Arkansas at bottom right. One fire appears on the Oklahoma-Texas border at bottom center. The large concentration of fires in Kansas and Oklahoma are creating a considerable amount of smoke, though the four large fires in eastern Oklahoma and western Arkansas are also smoking considerably.
