International Activities

Since launching the magnesium partnership in 1999, EPA has worked to generate global support for an aggressive voluntary climate protection goal. In February 2003, the International Magnesium Association Exiting EPA announced its commitment to eliminate emissions of SF6 by the end of 2010.

IMA, with EPA’s support, initiated a study in mid-2000 to identify and evaluate protective cover gas alternatives to SF6. The promising results of this continuing study are providing the industry with the confidence to establish such an aggressive climate protection goal. The Canadian government has also recently joined this cooperative research program.
