On April 17, 2002, spring was greening up the Eastern and Mid-Atlantic United States, especially (bottom) South Carolina and North Carolina. But in the higher elevations of the Appalachian Mountains in West Virginia (left edge, center) and Pennsylvania (northeast), brown, leafless areas indicate spring has not yet arrived.
