Youths as AIDS-awareness promoters.

Parra A; International Conference on AIDS.

Int Conf AIDS. 1992 Jul 19-24; 8: D392 (abstract no. PoD 5031).

Belize Red Cross B.R.C.

ISSUE PROBLEMS: Despite widespread AIDS awareness education in Belize High Schools. 14 to 18 year old students surveyed, felt an inadequacy in the Education provided. B.R.C. explored the effectiveness of Youth as AIDS Awareness Promoters (APP's) to increase AIDS education among youths. DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT: A preliminary training workshop for 8 A-Level students explored their training needs as potential APP's, and piloted various training techniques, assessing their appropriateness for preparing youth APP's. The participating youths were invited to assist on several basic AIDS education sessions for young people and an initial evaluation was done to assess the benefits of the youth APP training both from the perspective of the youths as facilitators, and those attending as course participants. RESULTS: All youths involved in the training contributed to the basic AIDS education sessions. All reported an increase in their appreciation of the seriousness of the AIDS problem, and in their confidence in discussing the topic. Youth attending the basic AIDS awareness sessions responded positively to the Youth APP's involvement. Other youth have requested APP training and a 12 hour programme has now been designed. LESSONS LEARNED: (1) Giving youths a share in the responsibility for AIDS education is an effective way of enabling them to develop an appreciation of the problem. (2) Youth APP training must be adapted to meet the needs of the different educational levels of the target group.
