New Fare Ordinance Frequently Asked Questions

Q: When does the new fare structure go into effect?
A: The new fares start 1 Feb 09

Q: Does the adult cash fare change?
A: No, it remains $1.00 for each boarding.

Q: Does the student cash fare change?
A: No, it remains $0.35 for each boarding. Student fares apply to students at public, charter, private or parochial schools, elementary through high school, during the entire year.

Q: Does the honored citizen fare change?
A: No, it remains $0.35 for each boarding. Honored Citizen fares apply to persons 62 years of age or older showing a picture ID for proof of age.

Q: Children age 5 years and younger use to ride free with an accompanied adult fare. Is there any change?
A: Yes. Under the new fare structure, children under age 10 accompanied by a paying adult ride FREE.

Q: How may children can ride free?
A: There is no limit to the number of children who can ride free if they are a member of the adult’s family.

Q: Will tokens still be accepted?
A: Yes. Both the adult and student tokens will be accepted until further notice.

Q: Can I still buy tokens?
A: Beginning 1 Feb 09, adult and student tokens will no longer be sold.

Q: Is there any change to the monthly Gold pass price?
A: Yes. The price of the monthly Gold pass increases from $28 to $30.

Q: What about the 3, 6, and 12-month Gold pass prices?
A: The costs for these have been reduced from $80 to $75, $160 to $125, and $320 to $225 respectively. The 3, 6, and 12-month passes will continue to be the same hard card format.

Q: Is there any change to the monthly Student & Honored Citizen Silver pass price?
A: No. The price of the monthly Student & Honored Citizen Silver remains $12.


Q: What about the 3, 6, and 12-month Student & Honored Citizen Silver pass prices?
A: The costs for these have been reduced from $33 to $30, $66 to $50, and $132 to $90 respectively. The 3, 6, and 12-month passes will continue to be the same hard card format.

Q: Is there any change to the monthly College-Vocational Silver pass price?
A: No. The price of the monthly College-Vocational Silver pass remains $12.

Q: What about the 3, 6, and 12-month College-Vocational Silver passes?
A: The costs for these have been reduced from $33 to $30, $66 to $50, and $132 to $90 respectively. The 3, 6, and 12-month passes will continue to be the same hard card format.

Q: Is there any change to the format of the new passes?
A: Yes, all passes will be in a new format beginning 1 Mar 09.

Q: Can I still get monthly passes at various outlets in Albuquerque?
A: Yes, those outlets where you have been purchasing your pass will continue to sell them.

Q: Will there be more locations where I can purchase a pass?
A: Yes. ABQ RIDE is working to increase the number of business partners in the Albuquerque area where you can purchase a pass. As they sign up to do so, ABQ RIDE will get the word out to the public.

Q: I already purchased my 3, 6, or 12-month pass, can I get a refund based on the new fare?
A: No.

Q: Will transfers be issued and will there still be the $0.25 charge?
A: Beginning 1 Feb 09, transfers will no longer be issued.

Q: What about using the Rail Runner tickets/passes to ride the bus free?
A: Rail Runner tickets/passes will continue to be accepted as in the past.

Q: What is the new 1-day pass?
A: The 1-day pass replaces the old transfer and tokens. It will start to be used on 1 Feb 09.

Q: Where can I get a 1-day pass?
A: 1-day passes will be sold at the ATC by ABQ RIDE’s Customer Service, at a new kiosk to the right of the Customer Service windows, and from bus drivers. These 1-day passes will be good for unlimited boardings on the day of issue.


Q: When can I purchase a 1-day pass?
A: You can purchase a 1-day pass from ABQ RIDE’s Customer Service, Monday through Sunday, 8 am to 5 pm; at the new kiosk at the ATC 24-hours per day, or from a bus driver.

Q: How do I pay for the 1-day pass at ABQ RIDE’s Transit Customer Service?
A: At the ATC, when purchasing a pass from Customer Service, you can use cash or Visa, MasterCard, American Express or Visa/MasterCard Debit cards to pay the $2.00. The pass is good for unlimited boardings on the day of issue.

Q: How do I pay for the 1-day pass at the kiosk at the Alvarado Transportation Center (ATC)?
A: The kiosk at the ATC will only accept Visa, MasterCard, American Express or Visa/MasterCard Debit cards or Albuquerque’s “Q” Card for the $2.00 charge. You insert the card into the kiosk, order the pass and receive the pass. The pass is good for unlimited boardings on the day of issue.

Q: How do I pay for the 1-day pass on the bus?
A: On the bus, you will pay $2.00 cash into the fare box and the driver will give you a 1-day pass that looks like a transfer. The pass is good for unlimited boardings on the day of issue.

Q: Are there any other multi-day passes?
A: Yes, beginning 1 Feb 09, ABQ RIDE’s Customer Service will begin selling 2 and 3-day passes.

Q: What is the cost of the 2 and 3-day pass?
A: The 2-day pass is $4 and the 3-day pass is $6.

Q: Can I get the 2 or 3-day pass at the kiosk?
A: Not at this time. Look for this expanded service toward the end of the year. 

Q: Can 2-Day and 3-Day passes be purchased for advance days. (i.e Citizen buys tickets today but wants to use them during the middle of the month?)

A: Yes, as long as they are consecutive days.

Q: Are there any other kiosks?
A: Not at this time. The one at the Alvarado Transportation Center is the first. ABQ RIDE anticipates having kiosk service available at the Northwest Transit Facility, the Uptown Transit Center, Cottonwood Mall, Coronado Mall, and at other strategic location in Albuquerque toward the end of 2009.
