Volunteering

Recreation Technician

- Paid or Volunteer Positions Available

For students working toward Recreational degrees this is an excellent opportunity to learn about recreation on BLM Public Lands.

 Work duties:

  • Perform maintenance of recreation sites and facilities (campsites, toilets, water system, trash, etc.) including cleanup, repairs and small project construction.
  • Perform trail maintenance and reconstruction.
  • Conduct weekly raft trips to maintain isolated river sites.
  • Perform informational and educational visitor contacts with the public.
  • Ensure compliance with Special Recreation Permit stipulations for commercial river rafting and fishing companies.
  • Perform maintenance and installation of signs and gates.
  • Perform monitoring and maintenance of off-highway vehicle use areas.
  • Conduct or assist in visitor studies to monitor use levels, preferences and conflicts.
  • Conduct patrols of wilderness study areas for monitoring use levels and compliance with management guidelines and objectives.
  • Perform emergency wildland firefighting on BLM lands.

Skills and Abilities: We are looking for individuals who are self-motivated and interested in natural resource recreation. Do you have (or are you willing to obtain) the following skills and abilities?

  • Experience in use of rafts, kayaks or canoes, preferably in whitewater conditions. Rapids in the area are rated Class I and II (easy to moderate) in normal water years and some Class III (more difficult) in high water conditions. (Training is available.)
  • Ability to work in remote locations under a wide variety of weather conditions.
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical exertion including, but not limited to, hiking, lifting, carrying, bending, digging, biking, walking and standing.
  • Good swimming skills preferred. (May need to swim in swiftwater conditions.)
  • Ability to schedule and conduct routine maintenance and repairs of recreation sites and facilities. Experience with the proper and safe use of hand and power tools and some basic knowledge of simple carpentry and construction. (Training is available.)
  • Ability to operate 4-wheel drive vehicle with standard transmission. Trailer towing experience preferred. (Training is available.)
  • Certification in basic First Aid and CPR. (Training is available.)
  • Good oral and written communication skills for contacts with the public and commercial outfitters to provide information concerning regulations and recreation opportunities, and to prepare reports and summaries.

Job Dates: From late May through late August (Eight week minimum required). Positions may be extended through September, if funding is available. This job will normally require 40 hours per week and days off will probably be Friday-Saturday or Sunday-Monday.

Work Environment:   Recreation Technicians will be working outside at high altitudes (7500 ft. elevation) and be exposed to a variety of weather conditions (temperatures 50 - 85 degrees)

Living Conditions: A personal vehicle is required due to distance from town and for personal trips. Living quarters are available. Living quarters will be located at the Pumphouse Recreation Area campground and consist of a 24' camp trailer with running water, hot water heater, shower, refrigerator, stove, and some misc. utensils. Toilets are available in the campground.

Campground Host

  • Host Duties: Hosts will serve as representative of the BLM. They will greet and provide information to visitors and help with campground management (register floaters and campers, provide information), light maintenance and upkeep.
  • Special Qualifications: Ninety-five percent of this job will involve meeting and conversing with visitors. Hosts must, therefore, be able to deal with the public in a friendly and courteous manner. Have a neat and clean appearance. Must have own self-contained camping unit. Be prepared to live in isolated area with gravel road access. Must possess a valid Drivers license.
  • Dates Needed: Volunteers are needed from Late May - Sept, this job will normally require 20-40 hours per week and may require work on weekends and holidays.

Location: Pumphouse Campground is located approximately 13 miles southwest of Kremmling, Colorado. Pumphouse is a float boat put-in point for private rafting, kayaking, and guided fishing trips on the upper segment of the Colorado River. The area provides 12 camp/picnic sites with tables and fire grills, 3 boat launches, and 3 restrooms (all are handicapped accessible). The majority of use is commercial float trips that arrive early in the day for full and half day float trips down the river. Pumphouse is located along the Colorado River Headwaters Scenic Byway.
