In September 1994, a Boulder Extension Office (BEO) of the SwRI ® Space Science Department, itself a unit within
the Space Science and Engineering Division (division 15) of Southwest Research, was opened. The BEO, which began with two
scientists, represented the first-ever off-site office for SwRI's space efforts. The Boulder office is now comprised of two
departments with a staff of more than 50, and is under the direction of Dr. Robin Canup. The Department of Space Studies (Dr.
Robert Grimm, Director) is comprised of three sections involving research in planetary science, solar physics and astronomy. The
Department of Space Operations (John Andrews, Acting Director) includes both mission operations and instrumentation activities.
The Space Science and Engineering Division (headed by Vice-President Dr. James Burch in San Antonio, Texas) is comprised
of more than 200 employees, and has as its goals excellence in space research and the expansion and deepening of SwRI's
space research efforts.
The Boulder office is located in the Exeter Building at 11th and Walnut St. in downtown Boulder, Colorado.
