Five BNLers Win 2009 Brookhaven Awards

At the annual Employee Recognition Ceremony held on June 22 in Berkner Hall, Lab Director Sam Aronson presented the Brookhaven Awards, given to recognize key contributors in support functions whose performance and achievements represent outstanding service to the Laboratory. Nominees are evaluated for the contributions’ exceptional nature, difficulty level, and benefit to BNL, as well as the length of time over which the contributions were made.

Michael Creutz has received a Humboldt Research Award, which will allow him to spend up to one year working on long-term research at an institution in Germany. Chuan-Hsiang Huang, a post-doctoral fellow at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, is the winner of this year's National Synchrotron Light Source Julian Baumert Ph.D. Thesis Award for his work on solving the structure of a protein frequently mutated in human cancers.

Battelle Honors Jacob Hooker as Brookhaven Lab's 'Inventor of the Year'

Chemist Jacob Hooker led research devising a method for adding a radioactive "tag" to formaldehyde. Using this labeled formaldehyde, scientists can now synthesize a whole new class of radiotracers, compounds that can be tracked by positron emission tomography (PET) scanners to monitor the movement and interactions of a wide range of chemicals in the human body.

Four Brookhaven Lab Scientists Named American Physical Society Fellows

Four Brookhaven scientists have been named Fellows of the American Physical Society, a professional organization with about 46,000 members. Election to APS Fellowship is limited to no more than one half of one percent of its membership in a given year, and election for this honor indicates recognition by scientific peers for outstanding contributions to physics.

Brookhaven Lab Receives Federal Award for Electronics Recycling

Brookhaven National Laboratory was named a winner in the Office of the Federal Environmental Executive’s third annual Electronics Reuse and Recycling Campaign at a White House ceremony on December 16. The Laboratory reused or recycled 143,600 pounds of electronics during fiscal year 2008, a period from October 1, 2007 to September 30, 2008.
