1) 2004 returning adult chinook salmon
From June to August, 2004, 2341 returning
adult
chinook salmon were recovered at the research hatchery at LPW. Of
this total, 2180 fish were recovered with coded-wire
tags (CWTs): 2166 that had been released from LPW and
14 strays from other facilities. The returning LPW chinook salmon were
composed of two stocks: Chickamin River stock and Unuk River stock.
Both of these stocks, originating from the Behm Canal area of southern
Southeast Alaska have been cultured at LPW for seven generations. Unuk River stock comprised
62.6% (1364 fish) of the returning
fish, whereas Chickamin River stock comprised 34.9% (816 fish).
Of the total
returning LPW chinook, 51.6% were males (1207 fish), 47.3% were females
(1108 fish), and 1.1% were of undetermined sex (26 fish).
For both the Chickamin River stock and
the Unuk River stock, 5 year old fish (1998 brood) dominated the return (Figure 1).
For both males and females, Chickamin River stock were generally
larger than Unuk River stock, respectively (Figure 2).
2) Release of 2003 brood year chinook salmon
On May 15, 2005, 163,823 chinook salmon smolts (2003 brood year) were
released with CWTs from LPW. Of this total, 124,871 (76.2%)
were Unuk River stock, and 38,952 (23.8%) were Chickamin River
stock. Historical release numbers are shown in Figure
3.
The mean weight of fish released was 29.8 g for Unuk River stock
and 25.0 g for Chickamin River stock. Historical release sizes for
chinook salmon released from LPW are shown in Figure 4.
