Doing Business in Bolivia

Bolivia generally welcomes foreign investment, but political and social instability can make it a difficult place to do business. Social unrest, arbitrary regulatory decisions, widespread corruption, cumbersome bureaucratic procedures, and pressure to abrogate contracts can all affect companies’ operations.

Absent significant changes in Bolivia’s legal framework, some of which may be proposed by a Constituent Assembly convened in mid-2006, the best prospects for U.S. investors are in the hydrocarbons and mining sectors.
