Oil and gas management are part of the BLM’s leasable minerals program in Arizona. Approximately 40 separate, non-producing oil and gas leases are located on about 83,000 acres in Arizona. The only oil and gas production in Arizona comes from leases located on the Navajo Indian Reservation. There are approximately 11 leases, containing 20 producing wells on 42,550 reservation acres. The BLM’s New Mexico Farmington District manages operations on these producing leases.

The BLM also manages leasable Native American mineral operations in Arizona. The major energy mineral leased on Indian land in Arizona is coal. Currently, there are two Indian coal leases under BLM’s supervision. Peabody Coal Company produces coal from the Kayenta Coal Mine from the Navajo and Hopi Indian Tribes.
