Region 9 Laboratory The Region 9 Laboratory is a full service, state-of-the-art facility specializing in chemical analysis, biological analysis and field sampling services. The Region 9 Laboratory plays a critical role in the EPA's mission of protecting people's health and the environment through the analysis of air, water, soil and biota samples (avian, fish and occasionally mammalian tissue).

Laboratory analysis time is scheduled through the Regional Sample Control Coordinator (RSCC) in the San Francisco Regional Office before a sampling event takes place. Environmental samples are received at the laboratory for chemical and biological analysis from sites administered by EPA programs in California, Nevada, Arizona, Hawaii and the Pacific Islands, subject to U.S. law. Chain of Custody procedures are adhered to throughout the preparation, analysis and disposal process for all samples received at the lab. The analytical data is used for preliminary site assessments, site remediation, compliance monitoring, enforcement, or ecological assessment.
