WASHINGTON, D.C.—Senator John D. (Jay) Rockefeller IV (D-WV), Chairman of the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, issued the following statement today regarding the Senate’s passage (60-37) of H.R. 3435, a bill making supplemental appropriations for FY2010 for the Consumer Assistance to Recycle and Save Program (“Cash for Clunkers”).

“I am encouraged by the recent positive data about this program and I support this extension because there is a sizeable and immediate return to taxpayers in the form of generating state and local tax revenue.  This extension will also help struggling U.S. manufacturers, local car dealers and related small businesses who employ tens of thousands of people.  ‘Cash for Clunkers’ has proven to be a creative and effective way to help jumpstart the economy and create jobs – and that is a very good thing.”
