(PESP Supporter since December 1998)

Integrated pest management (IPM) is a method of producing high quality goods and services with a minimum of pesticide and nutrient inputs. IPM benefits producers by reducing input costs and farmer health and safety risks. IPM benefits everyone by minimizing harmful impacts of excessive input use on the environment. Although proven IPM systems are available to deliver these benefits, adoption remains low. A number of regional efforts to market food products identified as IPM grown have increased IPM adoption by farmers, raised the level of IPM practiced by these growers, and raised consumer awareness of IPM and its benefits.

The Institute will extend nationwide the most successful regional IPM food product labeling effort to date, established by Cornell University and Wegmans Food Markets in 1995. The IPM Institute will operate with the support and involvement of Cornell professionals with first-hand experience, and will work closely with other programs (e.g., UMass Extension Partners with Nature, Mothers and Others, The Food Alliance) to reduce duplication of effort and consumer confusion with IPM identification marks.
