American Public Health Association

We promote the scientific and professional foundation of public health practice and policy, advocate the conditions for a healthy global society, emphasize prevention and enhance the ability of members to promote and protect environmental and community health.
American Society for Microbiology
The American Society for Microbiology is the oldest and largest single life science membership organization in the world. Membership has grown from 59 scientists in 1899 to over 42,000 members today located throughout the world. ASM represents 25 disciplines of microbiological specialization plus a division for microbiology educators.
Association of Public Health Laboratories
The Association of Public Health Laboratories (APHL) works to safeguard the public's health by strengthening public health laboratories in the United States and across the world. In collaboration with members, APHL advances laboratory systems and practices, and promotes policies that support healthy communities. The association's founding members are directors of state and territorial public health laboratories. Others include state laboratory staff, city and county laboratory directors, and international representatives. APHL is a non-profit, 501(C3) organization with a history of over fifty years.
Centers for Disease Control
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is recognized as the lead federal agency for protecting the health and safety of people - at home and abroad, providing credible information to enhance health decisions, and promoting health through strong partnerships. CDC serves as the national focus for developing and applying disease prevention and control, environmental health, and health promotion and education activities designed to improve the health of the people of the United States.
Environmental Protection Agency
EPA provides leadership in the nation's environmental science, research, education and assessment efforts. EPA works closely with other federal agencies, state and local governments, and Indian tribes to develop and enforce regulations under existing environmental laws. EPA is responsible for researching and setting national standards for a variety of environmental programs and delegates to states and tribes responsibility for issuing permits, and monitoring and enforcing compliance. Where national standards are not met, EPA can issue sanctions and take other steps to assist the states and tribes in reaching the desired levels of environmental quality. The Agency also works with industries and all levels of government in a wide variety of voluntary pollution prevention programs and energy conservation efforts.

Specialized Medical Assistance Response Team (SMART):
1. Provides specialized tactical emergency medical support to federal (i.e. FBI) and local S.W.A.T. teams (i.e. EC Sheriffs) during operations and training missions.
2. Provides on-scene triage, medical direction and advanced/specialized patient care during prolonged or unusual incidents, and during community and civic events throughout Western New York.
3. Provides prehospital educational opportunities to the SUNY @ Buffalo Emergency Medicine Residents and a means of conducting advanced prehospital care research.
4. Serves as an additional component of the Erie County Emergency Response Team in actual or potential disaster situations, including public health emergencies.
