The term seismic seiche was first coined by Anders Kvale in 1955, to describe oscillation of lake levels in Norway and England caused by the Assam earthquake of August, 1950.

The earthquake wrecked the town of Meckering and ruptured all major roads and railways nearby. A survey revealed a fracture of the earth's crust along an arc 29 kilometers in length which passed 1 kilometer northwest of Meckering. Minor damage was also sustained in Perth, the capital city.
