Women Assignments
EPM is committed to supporting diversity within the workforce. This includes
ensuring equal opportunities exist for women to be assigned to all types of
units and platforms. This is imperative for our members to achieve
competencies and experiences required for leadership positions.
Policy dictates that the Coast Guard should make every attempt to assign
women to units in groups of two or more for medical and companionship
reasons; however we must not deny a woman PCS or TAD opportunities solely
due to the lack of a second woman. Women are encouraged to apply to all open
positions that match their paygrade, and to contact their detailers to
obtain career counseling and information about each assignment. Likewise, we
encourage commands at units, both ashore and afloat, to contact EPM to
report mixed-gender assignment opportunities or if they foresee a
possibility that the number of females assigned to their unit might drop to
one. Many circumstances might arise where the Assignment Officer would
otherwise have no awareness that a female in their account has become the
only one assigned to a unit.

Women Afloat Cutter List
Due to the low percentage of women in our workforce (~12%), we do not have
the manpower to populate racks on every cutter. However, if women are
interested in positions afloat, we recommend the following guidelines:
1. Determine your short-term and long-term goals for your next assignment.
2. Review and compare all open positions of your rank and rating on the
shopping list with the “Women Afloat Cutter List.”
3. Call your detailer to discuss your advancement and career goals, as well
as your personal assignment desires.
4. Submit an e-resume that includes vacant positions that match your
paygrade and are on the “Women Afloat Cutter List.” List as many positions
as possible that you would be interested for assignment.
5. You may also include positions on your e-resume that are not on the
“Women Afloat Cutter List,” and we will determine the possibility of making
female racks available on that unit. Be advised, it may not be possible to
accommodate all requests for female assignments, especially on cutters not
listed. Therefore, your resume should include plenty of “Women Afloat”
billets should we not be able to accommodate your additional requests.
6. List your short and long-term career desires in the comments of your
e-resume. Explain the types of platforms and qualifications you are seeking
to ensure your AO has awareness. This is particularly important if you
aspire to be an OIC or EPO, or your rating requires sea time for
advancement.
