Better Value in Health Care through Health Information Technology

The recovery act provides $2 billion nationally through the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC-HIT) and other offices to improve the use of information technology in health care to improve the lives of patients. The Colorado Regional Health Information Organization (CORHIO) has been designated by Governor Ritter as the state-level entity to receive these federal funds to improve care for all Coloradans. For more information visit the ARRA section of the CORHIO website.  Additionally, you can read the Colorado Health Foundation's report on recommendations for advancing Colorado's health information network using the Recovery Act funds.

An additional $34 billion nationally will begin to be available in 2011 to health care providers through Medicare and Medicaid incentives for those that use health information meaningfully.

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) provides $2 billion nationally through the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC-HIT) and other offices to improve the use of information technology in health care to improve the lives of patients. The Governor's Office is working closely with CORHIO to determine the direction Colorado should take in applying for available grants and has taken some important steps to reach this goal:

  • Designating CORHIO as important component of the Building Blocks for Health Care Reform
  • Hosting an HIT summit (summer 2009) to discuss the importance of HIT in Colorado
  • Updating the state-wide HIT Roadmap for the state Educating communities regarding federal funds and state activities to improve care for all Coloradans.

Because of the Governor's leadership in the area of HIT, Colorado is well positioned to be a thought leader in the distribution of the federal funds. The State's plan is still being formulated and as information becomes available it will be posted on this website and at www.corhio.org.
