John Wennersten "The Patapsco And The Anacostia:
The Story of Ruin and Recovery in The Chesapeake"

The Patapsco and Anacostia Rivers have evolved over time from agricultural and transportation arteries, to industrial rivers that are sinks for sewage and manufacturing toxins. Historical overview of the environmental and social changes that conditioned the development of these two major watersheds in the Chesapeake Bay country. Dr. Wennersten will discuss how rivers reflect the society through which they flow. CBMM members $17, non-members $20. Includes lunch, pre-registration required.

Nature Appreciation: A Spring Day in Trappe
Saturday, May 9, 9am-4pm
*Off-site: Trappe, MD*

Spend the day with Paul Spitzer, a lifelong ecologist (Cornell Ph.D.) and protege of Roger Tory Peterson, to explore the âœEmpty Quarterâ of Talbot County. Through a series of trips around the Trappe area, you will discuss plant ecology, birds, and conservation philosophy. Bring a lunch! CBMM members $70, non-members $80

Boaters Safety

Any Maryland boater born after July 1, 1972, is required to have a Certificate of Boating Safety Education in order to operate a vessel. Participants completing the course and passing the test will receive this certificate. The course is also recommended for anyone looking to become a safer, more experienced boater. The course is offered over two consecutive evenings. Space limited; pre-registration required. $25 Certification/Course fee.

Henry Miller: "St. Mary's City, An Abundant and Fruitful Land: An Overview of Human Use of the Chesapeake through History"

Using evidence ranging from fish bones to shipping records, Henry Miller evaluates human use and impact upon the Chesapeake from the perspectives of archaeology and history. Particular emphasis is given to the colonial and nineteenth-century periods and the subjects of land use and the harvesting of estuarine resources. CBMM members $17, non-members $20. Includes lunch, pre-registration required.

"First Stop for the Bay Symposium"

Shore Land Stewardship Council, an initiative of Adkins Arboretum, is sponsoring this day-long, "First Stop for the Bay Symposium." The symposium will introduce Critical Area property owners in Talbot, Caroline, Kent and Queen Anne's counties to best landscaping practices, as well as provide tips for working with local planning departments toward a healthier Chesapeake Bay.

Workshop sessions include building a living shoreline, a rain garden, and Bay-Wise Gardens. There also will be a garden tour and a native plant sale. Workshop sponsors include Adkins Arboretum, Shore Land Stewardship Council, Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, Critical Area Commission, Environmental Concern, and University of Maryland Extension Master Gardeners. The registration fee of $25 per person includes continental breakfast, lunch, and a copy of the Council's new book, The Green Book for the Bay: An Illustrated Guidebook for Chesapeake Bay Critical Area Property Owners Living on Maryland's Eastern Shore.

Living Shoreline Planting/Work Day

Come out for a community work day to honor the memory of Kennedy Fitzgerald. In conjunction with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation and Environmental Concern, we will be plant new grasses for the Living Shoreline project, where a natural-style wetlands shoreline is replacing bulkhead and rip-rap. Friends and family of Kennedy, as well as members of the regional community will be on hand to continue that work that he so loved.

Aerial Views of the Bay Then and Now

Join aerial photographer Hunter Harris for a discussion of the new exhibit. âœThe Bay From Above: Aerial Views of the Bay Then and Now,â juxtaposes the 1930s-1950s photography of H. Robins Hollyday with new photography by Harris, pairing views of the same stretch of the Bay region. Harris will focus on the astoundingly beautiful and startling evidence of the changes in the Chesapeakeâ™s shoreline, farmland, and Bay spaces over the last 75 years. CBMM members $15, non-members $20. Includes lunch, pre-registration required.

Chesapeake Folk Festival

Celebrate the Bay’s people, food, music, work and traditions. Enjoy live music by the Zionaires, New Gospelites, Raging Unstoppables and Chester River Runoff. Great food, maritime and foodways demonstrations, boat rides, craft vendors. Included with CBMM admission (boat rides and food are an additional cost).
