Underway!
By science reporter Sonya Senkowsky.
Location: Heading west from Dutch Harbor
As one science team was boarding the RV Roger Revelle, another team of geologists and biologists,
also on a NOAA Undersea Research Program cruise was leaving from the Revelle’s first leg in
Aleutian waters. Some of the departing scientists shared news of their dives, which included
coral sampling at depths to 3,900 meters. “We’ll have to beat that,” quips a researcher lightheartedly.
Onboard, the Revelle captain introduces himself and gives a brief safety lecture, which includes a
demonstration of how to put on a survival suit. We also get to move our clocks one hour back,
gaining an hour, since we’ll be crossing a time zone.
