Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health & Society Scholars
2009-2010 Call for Applications
The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health & Society Scholars program provides two years of support to postdoctoral scholars at all stages of their careers to build the nation’s capacity for research and leadership to address the multiple determinants of population health and contribute to policy change.
Its goal is to improve health by training scholars to:
- investigate the connections among biological, genetic, behavioral, environmental, economic and social determinants of health; and
- develop, evaluate and disseminate knowledge and interventions that integrate and act on these determinants to improve health.

Comparative Effectiveness Research
Funding Opportunity Announcements soliciting research grant applications for CER will provide $148 million for evidence generation. This includes $100 million for the Clinical and Health Outcomes Initiative in Comparative Effectiveness (CHOICE), a new, coordinated, national effort to establish a series of prospective pragmatic clinical comparative effectiveness studies that measure the benefits treatments produce in routine clinical practice and will include novel study designs focusing on real-world and under-represented populations (children, elderly, racial and ethnic minorities, and other understudied populations), and $48 million for the establishment or enhancement of national patient registries that can be used for researching the longitudinal effects of different interventions and collecting data on under-represented populations.

Straight Talk on Preventing HIV Program
The purpose of the Straight Talk on Preventing HIV Program is to develop gender- and age-specific HIV/AIDS prevention education that is culturally, spiritually, and linguistically appropriate for female teenagers at-risk for or living with HIV/AIDS.

2009 Eliminating Disparities in Lupus through Education and Training for Health Professionals (EDLET/HP)
The purpose of this funding opportunity is to improve early diagnosis, treatment, and management of lupus for populations who are disproportionately affected by race, ethnicity and gender. This purpose will be accomplished by:
- Forming a consortium to help guide and inform the achievement of overall purpose and goals of EDLET/HP.
- Working collaboratively with medical school leaders to expand school curricula to include more comprehensive coverage of lupus.
- Developing, testing, and disseminating tools and curricula for improving knowledge and practices to health care professionals.
Achieving the purpose of EDLET/HP will require the applicant organization to develop, test, and deliver the curriculum in a variety of settings (e.g., medical professional meetings, on-line, webinar, and satellite). Physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses and other health care professionals will be targeted to receive this curriculum. Applicant organization will also be expected to work collaboratively with recommended entities to achieve these priorities.

Target Identification in Lupus
The Alliance for Lupus Research (ALR) is pleased to announce that the applications for the ALR’s Target Identification in Lupus (TIL) grants are now available online. Access the site directly at https://proposalcentral.altum.com.
Associated deadline dates are as follows:

Investigators seeking to submit grants applications will be eligible to receive a 2-year award for up to $500,000 with an opportunity to apply for continued funding.
The ALR funds research that will accelerate the development of new treatments of lupus. As such, grant proposals should be innovative in direction and utilize state-of-the-art techniques. Fundamental studies in genetics, immunology, cell biology and molecular biology to identify and characterize molecular systems must be oriented towards the development of drugs that would prevent and/or ameliorate clinical signs and symptoms of lupus.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Division of Cancer Prevention and Control, is pleased to announce a funding opportunity for state, tribal, and territorial health agencies.
The purpose of this funding program is to establish and integrate evidence-based colorectal cancer screening programs with existing CRC screening programs and/or other cancer screening or chronic disease programs, in order to increase population-based CRC screenings.

This funding opportunity is intended to support projects to reduce women's health disparities. Health disparities refer to gaps in the quality of health and health care across racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic groups. In the United States, studies have shown that health disparities have been experienced by African Americans, Native Americans, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, Latinos, isolated rural women and populations of lower socioeconomic status. Health disparities may have an impact on quality of life and mortality; quality and appropriateness of health care; the prevalence of certain health conditions or diseases, and in health outcomes.
