Implementation and Operation

Once TVA assesses its environmental performance and impacts, the process of developing plans to meet performance goals can begin. This includes providing training for the appropriate groups or individuals and making sure that processes and procedures exist to improve environmental performance and manage the potential hazards, accidents, and benefits resulting from TVA operations.

EMS Processes and Procedures

Structure and responsibility

  • Defines roles, responsibilities, and authority for TVA’s environmental activities and operations.
  • Aligns resources for implementation of the EMS.
  • Outlines a unified approach to “speaking in one voice” on environmental issues, events, and requirements.

Environmental training

  • Provides a standardized, comprehensive TVA-wide environmental training system.
  • Identifies environmental training needs for TVA employees and keeps record in the TVA Automated Training Information System (ATIS).
  • Provides standardized environmental training courses and evaluates training compared with environmental performance.

Communications and stakeholder involvement

  • Ensures that internal and external stakeholders are aware of TVA’s environmental performance.
  • Provides consistent messages for internal and external environmental communications through vehicles such as TVA’s external web site and internal News You Can Use feature.
  • Ensures that environmental decision-making includes public input.

EMS documentation

  • Provides a structured, comprehensive, written Environmental Management System throughout TVA.
  • Integrates and conforms environmental management to corporate performance plans, strategies, decisions, controls, activities, and operations.
  • Enables TVA to successfully uphold its Environmental Policy and Principles and promotes environmental awareness by providing a means for employees, partners, and contractors to identify their contribution to TVA’s environmental performance.

Operational control

  • Ensures that TVA achieves control of its activities, operations, and corresponding significant environmental aspects in order to meet TVA environmental policy and environmental objectives and targets.
  • Directs the conduct of environmental self-assessments to identify deficiencies and improvement opportunities and take appropriate actions.

Environmental emergency preparedness and response

  • Provides a standardized, agency-wide system for environmental emergency planning and response.
  • Ensures that TVA prepares for and responds to environmental emergencies in a structured and timely manner, and in compliance with all federal, state, and local laws and regulations, and with TVA requirements.

Field operations

TVA assigns lead managers and environmental contacts to oversee EMS implementation and environmental compliance for its operations and activities. This helps ensure that internal coordination is achieved, site-specific environmental requirements are defined, and environmental performance goals are met.

Watershed teams

TVA’s watershed teams work with local officials and civic groups to improve water and shoreline conditions.
