Health Department certifies courses at various training centers. When class is completed, applicant must pass both written and practical examinations, no charge for exams. All applicants for Colorado EMT certification must establish lawful presence in the U.S.
Three levels of certification: Basic, Intermediate, and Paramedic (requires 6 month field internship)
Reciprocity granted for states with certification standards at least as strict as Colorado. Contact division for reciprocity application.
All EMTs providing patient care in Colorado are required to have a Physician Advisor (also referred to as a "Medical Director") who directs how and where an EMT may practice. Physician Advisors must be registered with the Emergency Medical and Trauma Services section. The Health Department's web site has a variety of resources, sample protocols, etc., for Physician Advisors.

Physician Advisors are regulated by the Colorado Board of Medical Examiners.
Physician advisors may apply to the Board of Medical Examiners for a waiver to the maximum scope of practice (skill, procedure or medication) allowed for an EMT.
