Anyone who engages in "psychotherapy" as defined below falls under the Colorado Mental Health Licensing Act and should contact the Mental Health Licensing Section. Includes social workers, marriage and family therapists, professional counselors, and psychologists.
PSYCHOTHERAPY: The treatment, diagnosis, testing, assessment, or counseling in a professional relationship to assist individuals or groups to alleviate mental disorders, understand unconscious or conscious motivation, resolve emotional, relationship, or attitudinal conflicts, or modify behaviors which interfere with effective emotional, social, or intellectual functioning.
Any unlicensed psychotherapist is required to record their name, current address, educational qualifications, disclosure statements, therapeutic orientation or methodology, or both, and years of experience in each specialty area with the Mental Health Grievance Board for inclusion in the State Database. The Database application fee is $160.00.
