POLICY UPDATE: ROA Modernization Act of 2009 Senator Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.), introduced the bill on Aug. 6, 2009, recognizing the efforts of ROA in the national security. The Federal Charter is updated to reflect two recent changes in the organization; adding the position of "president-elect" to its constitution and bylaws, and expanding the number of national committee members to “a minimum of three” to take into account the present number of national committee members and to permit flexibility in changing that number Read Senator Leahy's comments and text of the bill (pdf) |

SERVICEMEMBER LAW CENTER UPDATE: State of Vermont in Violation of USERRA The latest example of a state government employer violating USERRA comes from Vermont. Sgt. Daniel Brown of Rutland, Vermont (ARNG), was hired by the Vermont Department of Corrections (VDOC) in January 2009 as a “temporary” corrections officer. Not long after he was hired, the Adjutant General of Vermont notified his employer that in November 2009 he would be called to active duty for deployment to Afghanistan and that in the months leading up to the deployment he would need time off from his civilian job for deployment preparation training. Soon after, the VDOC assigned Brown to undesirable shifts, denied him promotion to “tenured” status, and summarily fired him. Read more (pdf)
