Body color: Light red to orange w/ several broad, vertical black-red bands on body; in young specimens, the tips of the ventral and anal fins are blackened. (Also see above underwater photo.)

Similar species:

Redbanded RF and Flag RF - red bands on light pink background; head spine 6 and 8 absent.

Treefish - black bands on olive-yellow background; head spine count differs, spine 3 and 6 absent.
