The Oklahoma Department of Commerce administers numerous programs that help communities raise the per capita income and improve the quality of life for local residents. Community Development Block Grants assist with vital infrastructure issues. Funding for programs that improve the lives of low-income residents is provided to Community Action Agencies throughout the state. The State Energy Office supports renewable energy and energy efficiency programs across the state. OKC Residents Give High Marks for Quality of Life in New Survey

August 20, 2009 -- The Journal Record reports nearly 80% of Oklahoma City residents say they are satisfied with their quality of life according to a recent survey.

The annual study was conducted by the ETC Institute on behalf of the Oklahoma City municipal government. 80% of residents who responded say they believe their city is moving in the right direction and is a good place to live, raise children, and work.

Oklahoma Named By United States Olympic Committee as Olympic & Paralympics Training Site

July 31, 2009 -- Acting Chief Executive Officer of the United States Olympic Committee (USOC), Stephanie Streeter, recently announced the designation of two U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Training Sites in Oklahoma.

The USOC has named the Oklahoma River south of downtown Oklahoma City, in partnership with the Oklahoma City Boathouse Foundation, as an official U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Training Site for rowing and canoe/kayak. The University of Central Oklahoma (UCO) in Edmond, already a Paralympic site, added the Olympic designation to become an official site for volleyball, archery and Paralympic sports.

Tulsa Ballet Traveling to New York City to Sweep Business Community off its Feet

July 20, 2009 - The Journal Record reports the Tulsa Ballet will perform at the Joyce Theater in New York City in August.

The ballet's performance is part of an "economic recruiting trip" sponsored in part by the Oklahoma Department of Commerce and Tulsa Metro Chamber. The chamber tells the Journal Record it sees business opportunities the trip can develop for Tulsa.

Lawton Fort Sill Named the "Official Best City in Oklahoma 2009"

July 6, 2009 -- The Lawton Fort Sill Chamber of Commerce recently announced that Lawton Fort Sill has been named the "Official Best City in Oklahoma 2009" by the "Official Best Of" television company.

Lawton Fort Sill is the "Official Best City in Oklahoma 2009" and will be featured in the "Official Best of Oklahoma" TV special. This recognition closely follows the Business Week magazine endorsement of Lawton Fort Sill being the "Best Place to Raise Kids in Oklahoma."

Oklahoma Lands Share of $123 Million for Rural Water Projects

June 17, 2009 -- U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack has announced the selection of more than $123 million in water and environmental projects that are being funded immediately through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The projects will help provide safe drinking water and improved wastewater treatment systems for rural towns and communities in 24 states.

"The water and wastewater projects announced today support the Obama administration's goal of rebuilding and revitalizing our country's rural infrastructure and putting people to work by doing the work that Americans want done," says Vilsack. "These Recovery Act investments will provide reliable drinking water and sanitary waste disposal while creating and saving jobs in rural America."

New Field Artillery Museum Now Open at Fort Sill

June 3, 2009 -- The US Army Field Artillery Museum is officially open at Fort Sill. The new museum includes uniforms, insignias, guns, cannons, and exhibits that tell the story of Field Artillery from the Revolutionary war to the present.

The new Field Artillery Museum is also an official centennial project.

OKC Chamber Wins Award for Former GM Facility

May 11, 2009 -- The Greater Oklahoma City Chamber of Commerce recently won and Economic Development and Leadership Award at the CoreNet Global Summit in Dallas.

The Chamber was honored for its innovative public/private partnership leasing the former GM Plant to nearby Tinker Air Force Base, potentially creating thousands of jobs. Robin Roberts Krieger accepted the award on behalf of the Chamber.

Tulsa Recognized as Bicycle Friendly Community

May 11, 2009 -- The League of American Bicyclists recently announced  that Tulsa will be awarded the Bicycle Friendly Community Award. The award makes Tulsa the first community in Oklahoma to be recognized as a Bicycle Friendly Community.

Twice per year the League designates communities as bicycle friendly. INCOG, the Tulsa area’s Metropolitan Planning Organization, was the agency responsible for applying for recognition at the request of Tulsa Mayor Kathy Taylor.

2008 Community Development Annual Report Now Available for Download

Last year Community Development Block Grants (CDBG) awarded 163 new projects in Rural Oklahoma benefiting over 250,000 people.
