Our goal is to identify the factors that govern population dynamics. Emphasis is on an integrative approach, combining field and laboratory studies to provide data for mechanistic models of ecological and evolutionary dynamics.

Development and application of mechanistic models of stream fish population persistence: Human impacts are increasingly affecting stream habitats by altering connectivity, stream flow and water temperature. We are studying the mechanisms of population persistence by identifying how habitat variation regulates body growth, movement and survival.

PIT tag technologies: Data from PIT tagged fish have provided information to identify mechanisms regulating population dynamics in a number of systems. By designing and implementing custom-built portable and stationary PIT tag antennas we have further improved models of population dynamics by identifying fish movements and isolating emigration. We have also used PIT tag antennas to evaluate culvert passage; information which can be used to prioritize barrier remediation.

Evolutionary ecology: Estimating lifetime fitness in the wild provides key information on evolutionary processes. To identify the temporal and spatial variation in selection and heritability, we are estimating lifetime fitness of PIT tagged wild brook trout through multiple generations.

Genetics tools: We use genetic markers to identify population structure, to assist brood stock management and to provide a watershed-scale mark for stocked Atlantic salmon.

Other research: In addition to the science topics listed above where we are working towards understanding how populations of stream dwelling salmonids functions, we also have conducted research on other aspects of stream dwelling salmonids (to contribute to an overall greater understanding of how streams function) and other species (e.g. American shad).
