Later, she was a pipe fitter for Exxon, working at the company’s facility in Linden, N.J. After a stint with the pharmaceutical giant Merck, in 1989 she joined MTA New York City Transit. She held a number of positions there, including Deputy Line Superintendent, Line Superintendent, General Superintendent and Assistant Chief Maintenance Officer. Later, she moved on to Detroit, where she led the Detroit Department of Transportation before joining SMART.
