Ms. Thompson was appointed as the Regional Administrator for Region 3. In this position she directs a multi-level staff which provides the planning, grantmaking and project management for the States of Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia.
Ms. Thompson has over twenty years of professional and managerial experience in the U.S. Department of Transportation. She began her career in USDOT in the Federal Highway Office of Planning working on the writing of the planning regulations and in conducting transportation planning training in the field and headquarters. She joined the FTA in 1982 as Program Manager in the Atlanta Regional Office where she was responsible for the planning, program management, and grant making for the FTA programs in Georgia and Alabama.
Prior to joining USDOT, she held planning, program management and training positions in a community-based organization and in a national trade organization and taught at two universities and on secondary level.
Ms. Thompson received her Bachelor's degree in mathematics from Eastern Kentucky University and a Master's Degree in planning from Georgia Institute of Technology with a concentration in transportation planning.
She has received numerous performance and honor awards including the FTA Superior Achievement Award.
