Federal Employees Health Benefits Program is voluntary. Eligible employees are encouraged to enroll. Open Season is held once a year, from the Monday of the second full workweek in November through the Monday of the second full workweek in December. Employees can also enroll or change enrollment when a qualifying life event occurs, i.e. marriage, birth of a child, etc.. Below is a listing of current health care providers:
Life Insurance
Federal Employees' Group Life Insurance (FEGLI) provides an opportunity to participate in a group plan which offers low rates and the convenience of payment through payroll deduction. The Government pays one third of the cost of your Basic Life Insurance. Additional insurance is also available; the employee pays the full cost.
Permanent Federal employees are eligible to enroll for FEGLI. Participation is voluntary; however, if you are eligible, you are automatically covered for Basic Life unless you waive this coverage. If you elect coverage, you may cancel at any time. Some life qualifying events allow election opportunities. Occasionally open seasons are held.
Federal Retirement
There are two primary Federal Retirement Programs, the Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS) and the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS). Both provide retirement annuities, survivor, and disability benefits. Most Federal civilian employees are covered by one of these two retirement systems.
