Housing

"Our home is our castle." Senior Services promotes the goals to keep older adults active, healthy, independent, and living lives of dignity. Luckily, there is a variety of housing options and services that can allow this. Whether you live in the home you purchased as a newlywed, an independent apartment you moved to following retirement, a nursing home you've chosen to help you with medical needs, or if you've moved back with your adult children, your home is important to you.

While the Department cannot recommend one particular location or provider over another, we do maintain lists and a case manager may be available to discuss the various options. If you are in a nursing home, or considering one, please read about the Red Cross Ombudsman Program. If you think you need help to remain independent in your own home, call our case managers - perhaps grocery delivery or chore service is available in your neighborhood, or maybe you qualify for Food Stamps to help free up some extra money. HEAP might be available to help stretch those heating dollars.

The Caregiver Resource Center has helpful hints and information about products that might make your home more "user-friendly" when dealing with caregiving situations.

Errand and Chore Maintenance: Provides residents aged 60 and over in certain (limited) areas with assistance such as light housekeeping, shopping for a homebound person, lawn care and other needed services. Call our Information and Assistance number at 858-8526 to see if such assistance might be offered in your area.

Housing & Supportive Services: Through Catholic Charities, provides information and assistance for low-income residents age 60 and over with housing-related problems including relocation and tenant-landlord problems. Call Catholic Charities at 856-4494.
