Research Activities
NIAID focuses on (1) basic and/or clinical research on viral replication and pathogenesis, virus-host interactions involved in pathogenesis, and immune responses; (2) development of cell culture and small animal model systems for virus replication; (3) development of vaccines and therapeutics, especially new targets and novel therapeutic approaches for HBV, and vigorous programs to develop and test vaccines against hepatitis C virus; and (4) support of preclinical and clinical development resources (see below). Notably, in addition to individual investigator initiated grant awards, Cooperative Agreements and Interagency Agreements have been established. These include
- Eight new cooperative research centers for the study of hepatitis C virus (HCV), each engaged in various aspects of the host immunological response to infection, as it pertains to successful control of virus (RFA AI 04-028)
- Three partnership awards have been made to industry partners for the development of vaccines for HCV
- An interagency agreement with the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), through which the Division of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (DMID) provides support for the virology and immunology ancillary study conducted via NIDDK’s Hepatitis C Antiviral Long Term Treatment Against Cirrhosis (HALT-C) clinical trial
