Ergonomic Interventions in the Building, Repair, and Dismantling of Ships

Easy Fixes: Hatchguards

Hazard: Miscellaneous deck openings provide the opportunity for trips or falls especially among workers that may not be familiar with the immediate work area.

Solution: This circular hatch ring guard is bolted over an open deck at a Japanese shipyard to prevent workers from stepping or falling into the opening (see photo). The fixture should be sturdy enough not to bend or break under anticipated load.
