The National Weather Service and the New Mexico Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management have designated June 8th through 12th as New Mexico Monsoon Awareness Week. The campaign is designed to publicize the life-threatening weather hazards that affect New Mexico during the Summer Monsoon. These hazards include, but are not limited to, an increased risk for “dry” thunderstorms (capable of producing gusty winds and lightning with little rainfall which can exacerbate the risk of wildfires), lightning, flash floods, downburst winds/dust storms and heat stress.
