Each year in the United States, seasonal influenza kills more than 36,000 people and hospitalizes 200,000 others. Globally, annual epidemics cause about 250,000 to 500,000 deaths. Scientists in NIAID labs and at universities and medical research institutions worldwide are working together to find better ways to prevent, diagnose, and treat seasonal and pandemic influenza, including H1N1 flu. For the latest in NIAID-supported influenza research, please see Recent Scientific Findings.
Vaccine and Treatment Evaluation Units (VTEUs) are launching clinical trials of H1N1 vaccines. (Also read the Q&A)
