Invasive Species Bulletin

Invasive Species Bulletin
Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies.
New quarterly e-publication that focuses on state invasive species actions arounds the country with different sections focusing on different aspects of invasive species issues. The bulletin includes reports written by state invasive species coordinators on efforts to manage invasive species through outreach, collaboration, legislation and control techniques.

The Western Society of Weed Science held a symposium on the Biological Control of Invasive Plants at the annual meeting in March. It included presentations on saltcedar, which led to a debate on biological control among the participants.

The Encyclopedia of Life (EOL) has added interactive tools that allow the public to submit images and web content. EOL also facilitates public recognition and awareness of invasive species through detailed descriptions and maps, helping to slow their global spread and enable more rapid and effective remedial measures.

THEY'RE HERE AND THEY'RE HUNGRY... Ad Campaign Planned to Raise Awareness of the Threat of Invasive Pests to California's Agriculture and Environment (Aug 12, 2009)
HungryPests Coalition.
The advertising campaign includes print, radio and television ads and will run from Aug 17 through Oct 2009. The campaign is funded by USDA. The advertising campaign is not targeted at specific invasive pests or a particular strategy to deal with the pests. The goal is to educate and raise the general public's awareness of the risks from invasive species.


National Invasive Species Council Launches New Site

The National Invasive Species Council (NISC) was created by EO 13112 in 1999. NISC members are the Secretaries and Administrators of 13 federal departments and agencies to provide high-level coordination on invasive species and is co-chaired by the Secretaries of Commerce, Agriculture, and the Interior.

DNA Barcode Chosen for Identifying the World's Plants (Jul 28, 2009)

An international team of 52 scientists have concluded a four-year effort to agree on a standard 'plant DNA barcode', which will provide the foundation for the widespread use of DNA technologies to identify plants, making it quicker and easier to identify poisonous, endangered or illegal species.

Fungus Tapped to Take on Kudzu (Jul 16, 2009)
USDA. Agricultural Research Service.
Kudzu, "the vine that ate the south," which spreads at the rate of 150,000 acres annually, could meet its match in a naturally occurring fungus that ARS scientists have formulated as a biologically based herbicide.

Managing the Invasive Risk of Biofuels – IUCN Draft Guidelines Available for Comment (Jul 15, 2009)
International Union for Conservation of Nature.
IUCN Eastern and Southern Africa Regional Office of Nairobi hosted a workshop exploring invasive risks linked to biofuel developments, in April 2009. An outcome of the workshop was a draft of guidelines which are available for comment: Guidelines on Biofuels and Invasive Species: Draft for comment (Jul 6, 2009; PDF | 584 KB). The deadline for the comments is Aug 31, 2009.
