Numerous fires were burning in Eastern China on March 9, 2004, when the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite captured this image. The fires, which are marked in red, were most likely started to for land management purposes and are probably contributing to the thick pall of haze that is hanging over southeastern China.
