State Demography Office GIS

Geographic Information System
The State Demography Office in the Division of Local Government supports demographic analysis and population estimates with GIS. Our office is part of a larger census geographic partnership with the U.S. Census Bureau. We assist state and local governments who will contribute to a more complete and accurate census for their community.

Below are the census geographic programs this office is involved in:

2010 Census Local Update of Census Addresses (LUCA)
http://www.census.gov/geo/www/luca2010/luca.html

The Local Update of Census Addresses program, also known as LUCA, is a decennial census geographic partnership program that will allow the Census Bureau to benefit from local knowledge in developing its Master Address File (MAF) for the 2010 Census. Tribal, state, and local governments can contribute to a more complete and accurate census for their community by reviewing and commenting on the list of housing unit and group quarters addresses that the Census Bureau will use to deliver questionnaires within their community.

Boundary and Annexation Survey
http://www.census.gov/geo/www/bas/bashome.html

The U.S. Census Bureau conducts the Boundary and Annexation Survey (BAS) annually to collect information about selected legally defined geographic areas. The BAS is used to update information about the legal boundaries and names of all governmental units in the United States. The Census Bureau uses the boundary information collected in the BAS to tabulate data for various censuses and surveys, such as the American Community Survey and other Census Bureau programs, such as the Population Estimates Program.

Participant Statistical Areas Program (PSAP)
http://www.census.gov/geo/www/psap2010/psap2010_main.html

The 2010 Participant Statistical Areas Program (PSAP) will allow designated participants, following Census Bureau guidelines, to review and suggest modifications to the boundaries for block groups, census tracts, census county divisions, and census designated places for reporting data from the 2010 Census. The American Community Survey and other Census Bureau programs may also report data for these statistical areas following the 2010 Census.

MAF/TIGER Accuracy Improvement Project

The MAF, or Master Address File, is designed to be a complete and current list of all addresses and locations where people live or work, covering an estimated 115 million residences, as well as 60 million businesses and other structures in the U.S. The TIGER® portion of the project is a digital database that identifies the type, location and name of streets, rivers, railroads and other geographic features, and geospatially defines their relationships to each other, to the MAF addresses, and to numerous other entities. The Census Bureau's Geography Division maintains the two databases

Census Redistricting Data Program
http://www.census.gov/rdo/recent_news/010333.html

During Phase 2 of the Redistricting Data Program Voting District boundaries are enumerated to the lowest level of Census geography for the Census 2010 . States submit block boundary suggestions for inclusion in the 2010 Census block tabulations during this phase of the Redistricting Data Program as well. A verification phase is included for all components (VTD/SLD/Congressional) of this phase.
