On May 31, 2002, the Blackjack Bay Complex Fire was still growing in the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge in southeastern Georgia. The fire is spreading to the southeast and is now close to the Florida border. Started by lightning on April 30, the fire has been burning for over a month now, and has consumed more than 125,000 acres. In this image, the cluster of three red dots to the right of center mark the location of the active fires in the complex, and a large, dark burn scar is visible beneath the clouds. Firefighters are bulldozing near the southern fire perimeter to prevent spread. This image was acquired by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS).
