Atmospheric Chemistry Colloquium for Emerging Senior Scientists

Jointly Sponsored by:

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
National Science Foundation

The Atmospheric Chemistry Colloquium for Emerging Senior Scientists (ACCESS) brings together -- in scientific discussion and interaction -- young researchers, and representatives of the principal federal government agencies that fund atmospheric chemistry research.

The ACCESS program was initiated in 1991 and is held in alternate years in conjunction with the Gordon Research Conference (GRC) in Atmospheric Chemistry. ACCESS lasts 3 days and then the attendees go on to the GRC, which lasts 5 days. The meetings provide an opportunity for new investigators in atmospheric chemistry to forge future professional relationships. The entire atmospheric science community benefits by becoming more aware of innovations in atmospheric chemistry made by these researchers. A listing of all ACCESS participants over the history of the program is available as a pdf file here.

To be eligible as an invited participant at ACCESS, an applicant must have received a doctorate from an accredited university no more than two years prior to the colloquium, or alternatively, provide certification that in all probability the applicant will have received the doctorate degree in less than two years after the colloquium. The applicant's thesis or postdoctoral research must have dealt with an important problem in atmospheric chemistry. Attendance at the ACCESS Colloquium is limited to 25 participants. An international search is made for applicants recommended by their thesis advisors. A committee of three consisting of the ACCESS organizer, and the upcoming GRC Chair and Vice Chair make the final selections from a slate of candidates, which usually approaches 100, coming from the most prestigious institutions in the US and abroad. All expenses are covered while in attendance at ACCESS and the GRC, including transportation to and from their originating locations.

The tenth biennial ACCESS (Atmospheric Chemistry Colloquium for Emerging Senior Scientists) research colloquium for new PhDs in atmospheric chemistry will be convened at, Brookhaven National Laboratory on August 20-23, 2009. Participants will be invited to attend both ACCESS and the Gordon Research Conference (GRC) in Atmospheric Chemistry scheduled for August 23-28, 2009 to be held at Waterville Valley in New Hampshire. The colloquium is jointly sponsored by, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the National Aeronautical and Space Administration (NASA), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and the National Science Foundation (NSF).
