Undergraduate Internships:

Each summer, the Fisheries Behavioral Ecology Program offers several internships to highly qualified and motivated undergraduates. Students must be U.S. citizens and currently matriculated in a 4-year undergraduate program or have just graduated. Positions are competitive, with students recruited from throughout the U.S. This is a mentoring program, with each student working closely with a staff researcher. In addition to becoming familiar with the broad variety of research projects under way, students conduct an independent research project under the guidance of their mentor. Student research projects typically address one small aspect of the greater mosaic of research conducted by the FBEP group. In this way, prior studies conducted by the group provide a safety net of experience that helps assure that, whether the hypothesis tested by a student is accepted or rejected, the results will have significance. The program culminates with each student making an oral presentation on their project to the program staff and invited scientists from the Hatfield Marine Science Center (HMSC). Numerous students have presented their finding at national scientific meeting and, in some instances, published their work in international scientific journals. [Examples of recent student projects]

Graduate Internships:

The Fisheries Behavioral Ecology Program can provide research (M.S. and Ph.D.) opportunities for a limited number of graduate students. The availability of such opportunities varies from year to year depending upon funding, and generally requires a close concordance in research interests between a student and a staff researcher. Degrees are conferred through Oregon State University’s Departments of Fisheries and Wildlife or Zoology where Drs. Thomas Hurst, Clifford Ryer and Allan Stoner have faculty appointments.

Housing:

Housing is available on the HMSC campus, consisting of shared apartments with kitchen, living and study areas. Review of potential candidates normally begins March 15 and continues until positions are filled.
