Current Activities
Chuck Fowler is program leader of the Systemic Management Studies Program. The goal of his current work is the development and implementation of systemic management and management that is holistic, consistent and objective. His current efforts typify the application of systemic management, exemplified by work on sustainable selectivity to directly account for the genetic effects of commercial fisheries. Recent work includes an account of how systemic management achieves consistency in all of its applications, the definition of 'best available scientific information for management', management through maximizing biodiversity, and a book on systemic management published by Oxford University Press.
Chuck teaches university courses on systemic management and supervises interns developing data sets for various applications of systemic management: such as ecosystem-based management.
Background
Chuck received his Ph.D. in 1973 at the University of Washington (Center for Quantitative Science in Forestry Fisheries and Wildlife) after which he spent 6 years as research assistant professor at Utah State University teaching and studying stream ecosystems and population dynamics. He published a book with Tim Smith on the population dynamics of large mammals, and joined the NMML to become leader of the Northern Fur Seal Research Program. Since 1990 he has concentrated on understanding the failures of conventional management in order to define an alternative.
