Hiring OfficeThe Industry and Markets Fellows serve in the Office of Risk Assessment. The Office identifies, assesses and manages risks to the Commission's mission in the following ways:
The Office of Risk Assessment also works closely with other SEC staff to identify the need for, and create, risk-based and analytic tools aimed at prioritizing resource deployment for inspection and enforcement. In addition, the Office serves as the central hub for the SEC's risk identification process designed to facilitate the collection and reporting of risks identified by staff throughout the Commission. Industry and Markets Fellows ProgramThe Industry and Markets Fellows Program is designed to bring highly-seasoned financial markets professionals with specific knowledge of industry practice into the SEC in order to strengthen the Commission's oversight of the securities markets as they evolve. The Fellows work alongside staff in the Office of Risk Assessment in order to: i) identify risks to investor protection and market efficiency that might arise through current business practices; ii) assess if staff's current understanding of business practices is up to date; and iii) assist in raising staff's understanding and knowledge of industry practice where necessary through training and interaction. Work assignments for Fellows are tailored to the expertise of the participant and the needs of the Office of Risk Assessment and other Commission offices and divisions. The Program will initially include three full-time Fellow positions. Desired ExperienceThe SEC is seeking individuals with extensive experience in financial markets and in-depth applied knowledge of current industry practices. Relevant experience can be a result of work in a variety of industry segments, including but not limited to experience in trading in equity and fixed income securities, structured products, complex derivatives, financial analysis and valuation, fund management, investment banking and financial services operations. The Program is open to different types of professionals, which may include attorneys, economists, accountants, risk professionals and other experts in the securities industry. Candidates should be able to work independently or collaborate with others on projects of high visibility, including conducting special studies, meeting and consulting with the heads of various SEC divisions and offices, and assisting in coordinating projects between several different organizations. TermFellow appointments may be for up to two years and may be extended for an additional two years. Total appointments may not exceed four years. SalarySalary is commensurate with experience. In 2009, salaries for Industry and Markets Fellows range from $108,286 to $227,300.
